About Small Business Training Planner

Practical training and development resources for businesses that don’t have a dedicated L&D team — built by people who’ve actually run training programs.

Why this exists

Most learning and development content lives in two places: enterprise L&D platforms that cost $50,000+ per year and assume you have a director of training, or generic LinkedIn fluff that’s never been within ten feet of an actual training plan. Small businesses — the 5- to 200-person operations that drive most of the economy — get almost nothing useful in between.

Small Business Training Planner closes that gap. Every template, framework, and playbook we publish is designed to be downloaded, adapted, and put to work the same day. Not theoretical, not aspirational — operational.

Who we built this for

  • Founders and operators wearing the L&D hat alongside three other hats.
  • Office managers and HR-of-one operators who got handed training and need a framework.
  • Small business owners trying to onboard new hires without making it up each time.
  • Department heads in growing companies that haven’t formalized training yet.

How we structure our resources

Every piece on this site does three things: explains the concept clearly, gives you a concrete framework or template, and shows you a worked example. If a resource doesn’t include all three, we don’t publish it.

We organize content into four broad categories: onboarding (new hire ramp), ongoing development (skill-building once people are settled), planning (budgets, calendars, gap analyses), and compliance (the unglamorous training nobody loves but everyone needs).

A note on opinionsWe’re not neutral. We have strong views on what works — short cycles over long ones, manager-led over instructor-led for most things, microlearning over hour-long modules, project-based over passive consumption. When we disagree with conventional wisdom we say so, and we tell you why.

How we make money

Most of our resources are free. Premium downloads (more polished versions of the same templates, fully editable in your stack of choice) are paid. We also recommend specific tools through affiliate links — we only recommend tools we’ve personally used and we disclose every relationship.
